Recently, wildfire burned through Indian Trail, a Spokane, Washington neighborhood of ordinary suburban homes built between the 1980s and 2010s, fifteen minutes from downtown. High Country News reports that three fires around the city in Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview destroyed somewhere between 700 and 1,100 structures, and that the National Weather Service had issued the first "particularly dangerous situation" fire-weather warning in Washington state history. Spokane's mayor called it the worst natural disaster the region has faced.
Here's the sentence that should stop every grazing operator and every suburban homeowner mid-scroll: like most fires that destroy homes, these burned in the wildland-urban interface — and per 2020 Forest Service data, almost a third of U.S. housing sits in it. Not mountain cabins. Subdivisions.
If you graze for a living, your market just introduced itself
Most of us sell fuel reduction to the customers who already know they need it — the ranch on the ridge, the estate backed up to the national forest. Spokane is the argument for everyone else. The neighborhood that burned wasn't remote; it was the kind of place with sidewalks and school bus stops, edged by parkland and pine.
Three ways to put this to work honestly:
Name your local Indian Trail. Every service area has a neighborhood built to the edge of open land in the last forty years. Fire communication research is blunt about why this matters: generic warnings fail because residents assume the advice applies "to people elsewhere" (Wilson, McCaffrey & Toman, 2017). "Your greenbelt looks like theirs" lands where "wildfire is a growing risk" doesn't. If you're pitching an HOA, that's the opening slide.
Sell the edges, not the acreage. Suburban fires travel on the connective tissue — greenbelts, drainage lines, roadside grass, the strip between the fence line and the trail. That's fine-fuel, repeat-maintenance terrain: exactly what goats and sheep do well, on ground too steep, too wet, or too close to houses for machinery. And it's a recurring contract, because fuels grow back every season. USDA Forest Service synthesis puts public acceptance of grazing as a fuels-reduction practice at roughly 80% — you're not selling a controversial idea, just an underused one.
Lead with what worked, not just what burned. NPR reported zero deaths in Spokane — some 65,000 people evacuated, including a VA hospital campus, in a matter of hours. Officials credit forecasting, pre-positioned crews, and two mass evacuation drills in the prior year. Preparation, practiced ahead of time, visibly paid off. That's the same pitch as fuel work: the research consistently finds people act when they believe a specific action works, not when they're scared (USDA Forest Service, GTR-NRS-111). Fear freezes customers. Efficacy signs contracts.
If you own a home near open land
You don't control the weather or the ignition — Spokane's fires are being investigated as arson, and it made no difference to the outcome; wind and dry fuel don't ask how the fire started. What you control is what's burnable between the open land and your walls. Work from the house out: nothing combustible in the first five feet, thinned and mowed vegetation to 30 feet, then the shared edges — and that last part is a neighborhood conversation, because embers and flame fronts don't respect lot lines (NIST Technical Note 2205). If your HOA maintains a greenbelt, ask what the fuel plan is. If there isn't one, that's the meeting to request.
The honest caveat, always: no treatment guarantees a house survives a fire. Fuel work shifts the odds and buys firefighters room to operate. Spokane suggests that when a region stacks preparation on preparation — forecasts, drills, fuels, hardening — the worst day gets survivable.
The suburbs just got their notice. The operators who help them respond to it, calmly and specifically, are going to be busy for a long time.
